Machine Tool Orders Post Monthly Gain, Lag on Year-Over-Year Basis
Machine tool orders posted a small monthly gain in May but were far below year-earlier levels, the Association for Manufacturing said. Orders totaled $378.4 million for May, a 7.3 percent increase from an adjusted $352.8 million in April, according to a monthly report. But orders were 22 percent below May 2018 levels. They were also down for the first five months of the year.

Volkswagen Extends Alliance With Ford
Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG last week said they are extending a previously announced alliance. Now, the automakers will spend billions of dollars to jointly develop electric and self-driving vehicles, Reuters said. The move deepens a global alliance to pare development and manufacturing costs. It also positions VW as the initial winner, according to the news service. VW has agreed to invest $3.1 billion into Ford’s Argo AI self-driving unit. However, VW estimates it could realize up to $20 billion in revenue by sharing its MEB electric vehicle architecture with Ford in Europe, according to Reuters.
