Ford, Declaring Itself a Mobility Company, Revisits an Old Strategy
Ford, Declaring Itself a Mobility Company, Revisits an Old Strategy
Ford Motor Co. has acquired Spin, a San Francisco electric scooter company. The move is part of a strategy of making itself a "mobility company" rather than just an automaker. However, as Senior Editor Bill Koenig writes in a commentary, Ford tried something very similar two decades ago. At that time, Ford launched a line of Think (formally spelled Th!nk) electric bicycles, golf cart-like vehicles and small electric cars for short trips. Will Spin turn out better than Think?
Dynatect Roll-Up Covers for Safety
Dynatect Roll-Up Covers for Safety
Inspection pits, machine pits, and chemical tanks introduce workplace hazards. A roll-up weight bearing cover can allow access to the work area for machine maintenance or loading. Similarly, roll-up covers contain evaporative emissions of chemical tanks. Dynatect roll-up cover products are customized for the application, weight-bearing requirements, opening size, and operation requirements (manual or motor-driven).

Spending on Automotive Tooling to Fall in 2019, Consulting Company Says
Spending on Automotive Tooling to Fall in 2019, Consulting Company Says
Automotive vendors are projected to spend $8 billion on tooling in 2019, down from $10.3 billion in 2017 and about $11 billion this year, consulting company Harbour Results Inc. said. Why the decline? Fewer North American vehicle launches in the 2019-2021 period compared with 2016-2018. Harbour forecasts spending to remain stable in 2020 and 2021.

Base 11 Creates STEM Ecosystems for Training
Base 11 is a nonprofit workforce accelerator committed to solving the growing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) talent crisis, which is fueled by the underrepresentation of women and ethnic minorities, writes Christine Bryd, the group's communication director. "The STEM talent shortage is not new, but we need new solutions," Byrd said. "Base 11 believes that by solving this problem, we can also help to establish a sustainable, inclusive middle class."
Introducing the DRV Magic Drill for High-Speed Indexable Drilling
Introducing the DRV Magic Drill for High-Speed Indexable Drilling
Kyocera has developed a new line of indexable drills to be used mainly for holemaking in the machine tool business. Ideal for the automotive, aerospace and medical device industries, the new DRV Magic Drills combine a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coated insert on the outside cutting edge and a physical vapor deposition (PVD) coated insert on the inside cutting edge. This allows for high-speed machining and excellent drilling precision.

USB Devices Pose Threat to Industrial Facilities
USB Devices Pose Threat to Industrial Facilities
Honeywell said new research "shows that removable USB media devices such as flash drives pose a significant—and intentional—cybersecurity threat to a wide array of industrial process control networks." Data derived from Honeywell technology used to scan and control USB devices at 50 customer locations showed that nearly half (44%) detected and blocked at least one file with a security issue.

NCMS, Army Research Lab Kick Off AMMP Additive Manufacturing Program
The National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS) and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory have started "a new additive manufacturing initiative leading to increased speed in parts production, new weapon system design and materials, reductions in costs and delivery times, and point-of-need part manufacturing." The new program is dubbed AMMP, for advanced manufacturing, materials, and processes. AMMP will be based in Aberdeen, MD.
Innovations in Metal 3D Printing: Machines, Processes and Applications
Innovations in Metal 3D Printing: Machines, Processes and Applications
Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) has come a long way from early systems performing sintering-like processes to fully melting metal powder. With the advances in not only the machine, software and lasers, the applications have grown exponentially especially in the aerospace and medical industries. EOS takes a closer look at the past, current and future status of DMLS. Since powder is a common feedstock, we need to understand what powder properties matter. The unique nature of AM has opened a plethora of options in materials never seen before.

Tether Track Monorails Keep Workers Safe Over Conveyor Systems
Tether Track Monorails Keep Workers Safe Over Conveyor Systems
A major auto parts distributor was concerned that their maintenance employees were regularly required to climb out onto the extensive conveyor system in order to repair equipment and to eliminate backups in the system.

In several areas, the conveyors were suspended rather high off the ground, and with no adjacent flooring, the risk of falling was very clear.

When It Comes to Simulate Software, Seeing Is Believing
When It Comes to Simulate Software, Seeing Is Believing
Tired of riding the red button? Simulation software is the key to safer, shorter machine setups. In a perfect CNC world, the first part is always a good one. There’s no need for extra blanks or barstock. What is the magical technology that makes this world possible? It’s called simulation software, and even though it’s brought very few shops to the state of manufacturing nirvana described above, it’s an important move in that direction.
New Technologies to Drive Successful Additive Manufacturing
New Technologies to Drive Successful Additive Manufacturing
Additive manufacturing (also referred to as 3D printing) is a recent approach to building parts and holistic subsystems, through the addition of material (plastic or metal) layer-by-layer. Many companies have invested in the technology, but are struggling to capitalize on their investment and fully recognize the value of the technology. New technologies are aiding in the achievement of adhering to strict geometric tolerances, being able to replicate prints from one machine to another (or one location/factory to another) and to achieve success in the first print versus trial-and-error printing.
