For Autos, the Party May Not Be Over, But It Is Slowing Down
For Autos, the Party May Not Be Over, But It Is Slowing Down
For the U.S. auto industry, the party may not yet be over but it’s slowing way down, Senior Editor Bill Koenig writes in a commentary. For most of this decade, deliveries of light vehicles have surged after hitting bottom during the Great Recession. Now, however, sales are cooling off. The industry is starting to feel it, symbolized by General Motors Co. shutting down its small-car plant in Lordstown, Ohio. There are other signs the good times may not roll much longer.
Super Air Knife Replaces Noisy Blowers
Super Air Knife Replaces Noisy Blowers
EXAIR’s Super Air Knife delivers a uniform, high volume, high velocity sheet of air for blowoff, cooling and drying applications. Energy use is 1/3 that of typical blowoffs. Dramatically reduces air usage and noise when compared to other blowoffs – noise is under 70 dBA at 80 PSIG. Eliminates costly downtime of blowers. Large selection of sizes and materials available. Website offers detailed information, video.

Amazon Executive: It's Understandable to Feel You're Falling Behind in Machine Learning
Many manufacturers feel they are behind in robotics, automation data analysis and especially machine learning, and that makes sense, says Sarah Cooper, general manager for IoT solutions at Amazon Web Services (AWS). “Machine learning on machine data is extremely difficult," according to Cooper. "Another big challenge is the data is crap,”

Aerospace Turns to PVD Coatings to Replace Hard Chrome
Aerospace Turns to PVD Coatings to Replace Hard Chrome
Replacing hard chrome with a suitable alternative remains a significant challenge for the aerospace industry because of its widespread use as a surface coating on many components. One alternative that is increasingly being utilized in the aerospace industry is PVD coating, a strong, nonhazardous, REACH-conforming replacement option to hard chrome. Physical vapor deposition (PVD) coatings offer many of the same benefits and, in some ways, are superior to hard chrome.
CL5® Quick-Change 5-Axis Workholding
CL5® Quick-Change 5-Axis Workholding
Get Faster, More Accurate Set Ups! CL5® consists of three components: a subplate, a riser, and top tooling made up of a vise or a fixture plate. The subplate transforms a T-slot table into a modular fixturing plate, allowing flexible and easy clamping and locating of other tooling and/or fixtures. Every plate has built-in clamping and locating for risers. Designed to get the part up from the machine table, the Quintus quick-change riser allows 5-side part access.

In Laser Welding, Power Needs Precision
In Laser Welding, Power Needs Precision
With great power comes great responsibility, the saying goes. And with greater laser power being used to weld sheet metal, tubes, copper and aluminum, operators have a greater responsibility to deliver that power with a precision that avoids defects.

Comfort Is Key in Today's Manufacturing Plants
Comfort Is Key in Today's Manufacturing Plants
Providing for your employees is paramount in the current marketplace, writes Christian Taber, principal engineer of codes and standards at Big Ass Fans. (The company is so named because it makes really big industrial ceiling fans.) If you aren’t offering a comfortable environment for your workers, they’ll seek other options. Thermal comfort is an individual’s subjective assessment of personal satisfaction in an environment and is defined by international comfort standards.

Machine Tool Orders Fall in February
Machine Tool Orders Fall in February
Machine tool orders declined in February on both a monthly and year-over-year basis, the Association for Manufacturing Technology said. AMT said the 15 percent monthly decline was paced by a “nearly 50 percent decline” in orders placed by the aerospace, engine and turbine industries. McLean, Va.-based AMT said it still expects solid demand for tooling but there are uncertainties facing the market.
