General Motors Co. reported mixed quarterly results, relying heavily on sales of large pickups in its home market. Profit rose slightly but adjusted earnings fell. Regardless, GM's main source of profit was its home North American market. Its line of redesigned large pickups did the heavy lifting for the automaker.

Tooling Industry Continues to Slow, Capacity Utilization Slips |
|
The tooling industry continues to slow, with North American capacity utilization at its lowest mark since 2016, the Original Equipment Suppliers Association (OESA) and Harbour Results Inc. said. In the second quarter, mold shop utilization saw a decrease to 74% as compared to the year's first quarter. Die shop utilization dropped from 74 percent to 70 percent.

Manufacturers are hesitating to fully embrace technology on the factory floor, according to a study by accounting and consulting firm Sikich LLP. “The impact of digital technologies will require industrial companies to make fundamental operational changes,” according to the study’s executive summary. At the same time, Chicago-based Sikich said “many companies have yet to implement these new technologies.” |

The United States remains the top-ranked country for aerospace and defense “attractiveness,” consulting firm PwC said in an annual report.
