Manufacturing Growth Slows for Fourth Straight Month
Economic growth for U.S. manufacturing weakened in July for the fourth consecutive month, the Institute for Supply Management said in a monthly report. The Tempe, Ariz.-based group’s manufacturing index, known as the PMI, slipped to 51.2 percent last month. The index last rose in March when it stood at 55.3 percent. July's index reading was the lowest in almost three years, the last time the PMI showed economic contraction.

Tooling Industry Continues to Slow, Capacity Utilization Slips
The tooling industry continues to slow, with North American capacity utilization at its lowest mark since 2016, the Original Equipment Suppliers Association (OESA) and Harbour Results Inc. said. In the second quarter, mold shop utilization saw a decrease to 74% as compared to the year's first quarter. Die shop utilization dropped from 74 percent to 70 percent.

Manufacturers are hesitating to fully embrace technology on the factory floor, according to a study by accounting and consulting firm Sikich LLP. “The impact of digital technologies will require industrial companies to make fundamental operational changes,” according to the study’s executive summary. At the same time, Chicago-based Sikich said “many companies have yet to implement these new technologies.”
