GE's New Chief Slashes Dividend in First Moves at the Helm
General Electric Co.'s new CEO, Lawrence Culp Jr., slashed the manufacturer's quarterly dividend to a penny from 12 cents. The company also plans to split its troubled Power unit into two. Culp took over the helm at GE on Oct. 1. He used GE's third-quarter earnings report to announce his first moves to attempt to revive the company. GE posted a big loss after a $22 billion writedown of the Power business.

GM Posts $2.5 Billion Profit in Truck Sales; Buyouts Offered to Salaried Employees
General Motors Co. (Detroit) reported a $2.5 billion third-quarter profit on sales of high-margin trucks. The profit was higher than forecasted by analysts. North America was the primary profit driver for GM. Despite the good numbers, GM offered buyouts to 18,000 North American salaried employees. "We are doing this while our company and economy are strong,” the company said in an emailed statement.
