Up to 2.4 Million Manufacturing Jobs May Go Unfilled by 2028, Study Says
As many as 2.4 million manufacturing jobs may go unfilled by 2028, putting $454 billion in production at risk, according to a new study. That's up from 508,000 currently. A lack of skills and “impending retirements” of current workers “suggest the industry could experience employment bottlenecks,” according to the study. performed by consulting company Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute. Manufacturing “must contend with one of the tightest labor markets in recent history”.
Simply Measure with CALYPSO
Simply Measure with CALYPSO
ZEISS CALYPSO software takes characteristics from a part drawing - dimensions, position tolerances and form errors - to create objects to build a measurement plan. These object-driven characteristics eliminate the frustrations of programming code and allow measurement plan building and editing to take seconds, not minutes, which gives your products speed to market.

Machine Tool Orders Rise on IMTS; Strong End to 2018 Is Forecast
Machine tool orders rose in September as business was bolstered by the 2018 edition of IMTS, the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT; McLean, VA) said in a monthly report. IMTS also provided a surge for October sales, which haven't been reported yet, according to AMT. It is "going to be a real strong finish to 2018," said Pat McGibbon, an AMT vice president. Senior Editor Bill Koenig goes through the numbers.
New Technologies to Drive Successful Additive Manufacturing
New Technologies to Drive Successful Additive Manufacturing
Additive manufacturing (also referred to as 3D printing) is a recent approach to building parts and holistic subsystems, through the addition of material (plastic or metal) layer-by-layer. Many companies have invested in the technology, but are struggling to capitalize on their investment and fully recognize the value of the technology. New technologies are aiding in the achievement of adhering to strict geometric tolerances, being able to replicate prints from one machine to another (or one location/factory to another) and to achieve success in the first print versus trial-and-error printing.

Price Downturn Leads Shale Producers to Seek Greater Efficiency
Price Downturn Leads Shale Producers to Seek Greater Efficiency
Energy producers are looking to Industry 4.0 for new ideas on automation, use of sensors, big data and remote monitoring, writes Contributing Editor Ilene Wolff. After petroleum prices collapsed in the mid-2010s, shale oil and gas producers responded to the down-swing by borrowing techniques and technology from the energy sector’s offshore well operations, manufacturing, and even the medical industry to increase efficiency.

Siemens Introduces Process Simulation to Improve 3D Printing Accuracy
Siemens Introduces Process Simulation to Improve 3D Printing Accuracy
Siemens introduced an additive manufacturing process simulation for predicting distortion during 3D printing. The company said the product is "fully integrated" into its end-to-end additive manufacturing solution "which assists manufacturers in designing and printing useful parts at scale." The simulation process "uses a digital twin to simulate the build process before printing, anticipating distortion within the printing process and automatically generating the corrected geometry to compensate for these distortions," Siemens said.
When Scrap Goes Rogue
When Scrap Goes Rogue
Time is money, as they say, and each incident can cost thousands of dollars in production time lost, employee efficiency halted and ruined inventory.

This webinar will showcase how to avoid this exact issue with great accuracy through virtual simulation which will identify – down to the time and location – where a new stamping run will fail and will allow you to make decisions and adjustments before everything grinds to a halt.
