Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow, the Detroit-based manufacturing institute is in the middle of a “pivot,” the group’s chief executive officer said. LIFT wants to reach out to more small- to medium-sized manufacturers to become members, Nigel Francis, CEO and executive director, said in an interview. “The small- to medium-manufacturing base needs help,” he said. LIFT also is moving into smart manufacturing. “We’re in the middle of a giant pivot."

Durable goods orders slid in May on a plunge in orders for aircraft, the U.S. Commerce Department said. Orders totaled $243.4 billion, down $3.3 billion, or 1.3 percent, from the month before. The biggest drag on the figures was transportation equipment, down 4.6 percent. Orders for both commercial and defense aircraft nosedived.

Boeing Co.'s 737 Max likely will stay grounded until the end of 2019 because of another flight-control problem , The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people who have been briefed about the situation. The latest hazard stems from potential problems related to electronic hardware, The Journal said. "The setback, at the very least, is expected to prompt additional disruptions to airline schedules across the U.S. and overseas as some 500 of the planes remain idled for months longer than previously projected," the newspaper said..
