Manufacturing Index Zooms in March, Reaches Four-Decade High

Manufacturing Maintains Strong Momentum in May

Manufacturing ramped up in May, improving from strong results the month before, the Institute for Supply Management said. The Tempe, Ariz.-based group’s manufacturing index, known as the PMI, improved to 61.2 percent last month, up from 60.7 percent in April. The gain was fueled by an increase in new orders.

Manufacturing Jobs Rise With Boost From Motor Vehicles


Manufacturing employment rose in May, receiving a major boost from motor vehicles and parts where people returned to work after temporary layoffs. Manufacturing jobs increased by 23,000, according to a breakdown by sector released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Durable goods contributed a gain of 18,000 jobs.

The Detroit Free Press reported that GM said it is increasing output of large and mid-size pickups. GM said it has found ways to improve efficiency, according to the newspaper.

3D Systems Agrees to Sell Unit


3D Systems, Rock Hill, S.C., said it agreed to sell its On Demand Manufacturing business to Trilantic North America, a private equity firm, for a purchase price of $82 million. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and adjustments.The sale includes the company’s On Demand Manufacturing experts and facilities in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee; Seattle; Le Mans, France; Pinerolo, Italy; and High Wycombe, England.
