An Era Ends as Detroit Automakers Cease Monthly Sales Reports
An Era Ends as Detroit Automakers Cease Monthly Sales Reports
In the end, neither Ford Motor Co. nor FCA US LLC could resist a move General Motors Co. made last year. As a result, the era of monthly vehicle sales reports — at least among U.S.-based automakers — will soon end. GM said reporting less often would "separate real sales trends from short-term fluctuations." That was good enough for Ford (which stopped monthly reporting this year) and FCA (which will go to a quarterly system in the second half of 2019). The automakers also cited transparency. It’s always more transparent to report data less frequently than more frequently. Right?

Manufacturing Index Slows Down in April
Manufacturing Index Slows Down in April
Manufacturing eased off the accelerator in April as new orders slowed down, the Institute for Supply Management said. “New orders side was a little disappointing,” Timothy R. Fiore, chair of ISM’s Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, said on a conference call. “That’s a little bit concerning.” The index is considered a leading indicator, meaning it’s a sign of what may be ahead for the economy.

The State of Cyber Defense (Spoiler: It Has a Ways to Go)
Cyber defense is still a maturing concept in manufacturing: Executives are growing more aware of threats and making better investments to mitigate them. “Cybersecurity is an infant right now,” said Ken Modeste, director of connected technologies at UL. “It’s going to grow up. You will see significant changes over the next few years.” Brett Brune, editor in chief of Smart Manufacturing magazine, examines what's needed to advance cybersecurity.

Needed: Manufacturing Strategies to Implement IoT
Needed: Manufacturing Strategies to Implement IoT
Most companies do not have a clear strategy for how they are applying IoT, Mark Weatherford, former deputy under secretary for cybersecurity at the Department of Homeland Security, said at an exclusive roundtable Smart Manufacturing convened recently in Chicago. “The things that we’re building today are completely different than the things we’re going to build 12 months from now,” he said. “The innovation cycle around IoT is dramatic, it’s revolutionary. Those of us who are on the security side of things are trying to plug fingers in all of these holes.”

GM Quarterly Profit Rises by Selling More High-End Pickups
General Motors Co. said its first-quarter profit more than doubled on increased high-profit pickup sales. Deliveries of 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra light-duty crew ups surged 20 percent during the quarter. The 2019 trucks are priced about $5,800 more than they models they replaced. The automaker said it was part of a strategy to introduce “high-content, high-margin trucks first.” The rise in pickups occurred as GM’s total U.S. deliveries fell 7 percent in the first quarter.

When Your Ship Comes in and Needs Sizing Up
When Your Ship Comes in and Needs Sizing Up
When drilling a well, clearing a forest or excavating a building site, experienced operators count on their toughest equipment to help them get the job done. The same is true for a big measuring job that won’t fit into a metrology lab—a train car, ship or airplane—when experts pack laser trackers and scanners that can not only capture large point clouds but also function reliably where there may be no electrical outlets and when the weather messes with the most carefully laid out plans.
