CLOSER LOOK: Machine Tool Orders Plunge in First Half of 2019
Machine tool orders plunged 13 percent in the first half of 2019, the Association for Manufacturing Technology said in a report. Year-over-year comparisons “are likely to get worse as we get through the rest of the year,” Pat McGibbon, AMT's chief knowledge officer, said in a video accompanying the report. “That number is likely to get a lot worse before it gets better.” By the end of the third quarter, orders will probably be down 20 percent compared with 2018.

FCA's New Detroit Factory Reaches Symbolic Milestone
FCA US LLC’s new Detroit plant under construction reached a symbolic milestone when the first of 299 steel columns went up for what will be a brand new paint shop. The Auburn Hills, Mich.-based automaker is investing $1.6 billion to construct a new assembly plant to expand output of Jeep SUVs. The paint shop, an entirely new structure, is the most complicated part of the project. FCA also is converting two existing buildings at its Mack Avenue Engine Complex to be part of the new assembly operation.

Auburn University Deploys System to Inspect Structural Integrity of AM Parts
Auburn University’s Samuel Ginn College of Engineering has begun in-process inspection of additive manufactured parts utilizing a customized digital radiology vault and specialized additive manufacturing systems designed by university researchers. The new system was acquired through a $1.5 million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology awarded to Auburn’s Center for Additive Manufacturing.
