Cold Weather Slows Manufacturing Expansion in February
Cold Weather Slows Manufacturing Expansion in February
Manufacturing expansion slowed in February as new orders, production and employment all slipped, the Institute for Supply Management said. One factor was severe cold, which caused factories to shut down. Normally in winter, weather only results in slower output. ISM still is optimistic about manufacturing for the rest of 2019. Senior Editor Bill Koenig goes through the numbers.

Goodbye DMDII. Hello, MxD
Goodbye DMDII. Hello, MxD
The Manufacturing USA network of manufacturing institutes is known for many things. Having simple names isn't one of them. But the  Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) is giving it a try. The Chicago-based institute is being renamed MxD, as in Manufacturing times Digital. The organization also is being separated from UI Labs. Maybe other Manufacturing USA institutes will try simpler names.

Non-Automotive Manufacturing Flocks to Robots
Non-Automotive Manufacturing Flocks to Robots
Cheaper robots with more functions, along with more flexible work cells and installations that facilitate robotics, are accelerating the growth of automated manufacturing facilities in the non-automotive sector, writes Contributing Editor Ilene Wolff. Ideas on whether robotics and automation lead to lights-out manufacturing on the shop floor, though, are mixed.
