Manufacturing Slows Significantly in December, ISM Says
Manufacturing Slows Significantly in December, ISM Says
Manufacturing expansion slowed significantly in December as new orders, production and employment growth all cooled, the Institute for Supply Management said in a monthly report. The group’s manufacturing index, known as the PMI, slipped to 54.1% last month. That was down from 59.3% in November. December was the lowest PMI of 2018. The PMI is a leading indicator meaning it reflects what may be coming in the near future. New orders particularly slowed.

Five-Axis Machining Is Easier Than You Think
Five-Axis Machining Is Easier Than You Think
As industry veteran Andy McNamara would have it, “getting customers to move into five-axis machining is all about giving them confidence. Changing their notion that going to a five-axis automatically makes things much harder.” And according to McNamara, director of sales for Doosan Machine Tools America, the most important tools in that effort are features within the control that make it simple to create, understand and prove out machining programs. Those features are now common among all high-end machine tool builders.

Reverse-Engineered World Series Trophy Honors 1968 Detroit Tigers
Technology came to the aid of Detroit Tigers management when the team hoped to recapture some of the magic of the team's 1968 World Series-winning season. The 16 surviving members of the 1968 team were presented with replicas of the World Series’ trophy during on-field ceremonies in September. To make those replicas, Tigers’ management turned to 3-Dimensional Services Group, a provider of rapid manufacturing services. Here's how the replicas were produced.

Universal Robots Celebrates 10th Anniversary of First Commercially Viable Cobot
Universal Robots Celebrates 10th Anniversary of First Commercially Viable Cobot
When Linatex (Herlev, Denmark), a Danish supplier of technical plastics and rubber for industrial applications, bought a UR5 robot arm from Universal Robots (UR; Odense, Denmark) to automate CNC machine tending in December 2008, it did something unthinkable. Instead of installing the robot behind safety caging, fenced off from people as was the norm for all industrial robots, it deployed the robot alongside its employees. Thus began a era of commercially viable collaborative robots, or cobots. Things haven't been the same since.

Workhorse 7000 Series Aluminum in Search of Increased MRR
Workhorse 7000 Series Aluminum in Search of Increased MRR
Machining systems are purpose-built for high metal removal rate (MRR) production because of the overwhelming amount of material that must be removed quickly. The 7000 series of aluminum is made with a combination of zinc and magnesium or zinc and copper and pose significant challenges to increasing MRR and throughput while improving quality. Series 7000 aluminums are typically used for aerospace structural components and skin. They require high-capability machines, typically five-axis units with 30,000 rpm spindle capabilities and 80 to 100 hp (60-75 kW).
