FCA to Emphasize Jeep Around the World, Will Push Ram, Too
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles intends to make Jeep "the world's dominant utility vehicle," the Detroit Free Press said, citing a company presentation June 1 in Italy. "The company aims for 1 in 12 utility vehicles sold to be a Jeep by 2022, eventually reaching 1 in 5," the newspaper said. The figure was 1 in 23 in 2009. Also on tap: Plans for "aggressive growth of the Ram truck brand."

Manufacturing Hums Along, Adds 18,000 Jobs in May
Manufacturing continued to advance in May, adding 18,000 jobs, mostly in durable goods. The durable goods sector boosted employment by 15,000 jobs, according to a breakdown by industry released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. One big winner was machinery, up 5800 jobs. One weak sector for employment was motoroized vehicles and parts, down 4400.

Formula SAE competitions challenge teams of university undergraduate and graduate students to design and fabricate a small, formula-style vehicle. For the University of Connecticut FSAE team’s entry for a Formula SAE Michigan competition, Bolton Works (East Hartford, CT) provided advanced reverse engineering to make 3D CAD models in Solidworks of a Suzuki GSX-R600 engine. The CAD models are used to check for interference and to facilitate design modification of the engine.

Stratasys Chief Departs Amid Financial Losses
Stratasys Ltd. (Minneapolis and Rehovot, Israel), the 3D printing company, said its CEO is leaving, with no permanent replacement named and amid financial losses. Ilan Levin, 52 and CEO since July 2016, departed effective June 1. Elchanan “Elan” Jaglom, the company’s chairman, will take over as interim CEO until a permanent successor is named. Levin also stepped down as a Stratasys director. He had been on the board since 2000. Stratasys lost money throughout Levin's tenure as CEO.

Boeing Workers at South Carolina Plant Vote to Unionize
Flight-readiness technicians and inspectors at a Boeing plant in North Charleston, NC, voted to unionize, according to NPR. Only 178 employees will now be represented by the Machinists union. Regardless, it was a rare win for a union trying to establish a presence at a major Southern factory.  The vote came a year after a broader unionization effort at the Boeing plant failed. The factory makes Boeing 787 aircraft.
